As the project lead, I managed the migration of 15TB of on-prem files to Microsoft SharePoint for day-to-day operations and Azure Files Services for archiving. The project also included re-aligning Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) to enhance security and collaboration. Despite completing the migration successfully, the organization decided to keep the data on-prem due to concerns about cloud security and control.
- Seamless Migration: Migrated 15TB of operational files to SharePoint for improved access and collaboration. Data integrity and minimal disruption were ensured throughout the process.
- Archiving with Azure Files Services: Implemented a cost-effective archiving solution using Azure Files for non-critical data, with backup and restore options, ensuring secure long-term storage and compliance.
- RBAC Implementation: Reconfigured RBAC policies for both SharePoint and Azure, ensuring secure access based on employee roles. This allowed for controlled access to sensitive data while fostering collaboration.
- Backup & Restore Strategy: Developed a robust strategy for backing up live and archived data, ensuring rapid recovery in the event of data loss.
Final Decision: Although the cloud solution was fully deployed, the organization opted to stay on-prem due to concerns about cloud security, data privacy, and control. The solution was rolled back to on-prem infrastructure while ensuring continued data security and access.
Despite the shift back to on-prem, the project showcased the advantages of cloud migration and improved the company’s approach to data management and security.
